I am a grandpa, who has a 5 year old little boy, brillant in mind, and c.p. on the right side.

My question,..would it be wise to have a shoe with a lift on it for his right leg to balance the gate, and the spine. Second, my daughter-in law wants to start tendon lenghtening. i, and my son, feel that this may be to early for such drastic measures to start. We feel that this procedure should start, when he is in his teen's , and has reached his averege weight. Your feedback, and comments are most valued.

I am so glad, that i have found this website, to help me understand the complications that involved with since birth.

Thank you, all for listening to this old war time man, and thank you to a man, named Nathan, who responed to my help, who is on your staff, thanks Nate.
I am leaving with you all my email address, for a direct answers. iIn closing, some of you may be wondering, why i don't talk to the doctors about some of these questions, well to this old timer, doctors, are wonderfull people, but medicine, is a business, your opinion, means more to me than there's, remember, we are in the trenches, they are not. thanks again for listening.

Sincerely, John L. Roberts

we had our sons tendon lengthened when he was 5 and a half years old. It has been about 8 months since. He does no walk on his toes anymore and his gate has improved. we have not seen any side-effect, but then again its been just 8 months since the surgery.

Our little girl had her tendons lengthened when she was 5 years old. She is now 11 years old and walks & runs normally. I would definately do it again at 5 years old . I wouldn't have wanted her to miss the last six years not walking & growing correctly. God bless.

My granddaughter can't stand or walk (yet?) but at age 3 she had it done b/c her foot was being skewed by the muscles pulling (the hip is out of socket) so we were afraid the bones might grow crookedly if we didn't have it done. Now at least we can straighten her foot out.

The situation is not comparable, but I thought I'd add our experience.

My granddaughter's mama said to be sure it's necessary, that is, is the condition really painful, or is the foot growing wrong, and orthotics etc aren't helping. She also said there's not a high risk of the surgery messing him up, but there is always some risk with surgery. Also, it leaves scars.

Derek was diagnosed with spastic quadraplegic cerebral palsy, moderate autism, and seizure clusters. I am not sure this will help, but it is just my experience. Our son is now six, and had the adductor tendon release and heel cord lengthening surgery done at 3. Prior to the surgery, he couldn't stand or crawl normally because his legs were too tight to straighten. After the recovery (8 weeks casted and 2 more months continuous therapy), he stood up by himself for the first time. He now walks with a walker, slow, but walking. I don't know how severe the spacisity is in your case, but Derek's was pulling his hips and ankle joints out of place. We were encouraged to continue with leg and hip braces, because he "couldn't get worse". But we wanted him better, not "not getting worse". If we had the choice again, we would do it again. No regrets. It's hard work following the surgery, but our results were worth it. Good luck!

Hi

I have cerebral palsy on the right side. I have had it since birth. I am now 46. I have a very good career in the finance industry I had tedon lengthening when I was three and further work on my right arm when I was 11. The operations were successful and I lead a very active life - including hiking in the Himalayas and Africa.

The most important thing is that the individual has a very positive view on life and living and has ambition. I go to the gym regularily because the downside of CP is that you must stay supple. However i must say at the age of 46 I am starting to feels the aches and pains that normally should not appear until a much older age. But heck how many people get to hike up to 15,000 ft in the himalayas, or Hike in the Kruger oark in Africa.

Please feel free to contact me if you require further information.

Hi, I am a grandmother, who has a 6yr old granddaughter w/mild CP. She was a tippy toe walker as well. We started w/ PT, then went in for Botox shots(which did nothing for her) After much discussion w/her orthopedic doctor we decided on the lengthing surgery last year(she was 5 1/2) . The results were amazing! She walks completely flat footed, she falls less, has better balance & can even run. Every situation is different, but if the Dr says it ok, then I would go for it. The recovery was pretty quick. She missed almost a month of school, but that was because of wheel chair issues & staffing(private school)
